Vantage Point
So many scenes in life look different depending on your perspective. One may look at the lavish lifestyle of a celebrity and think it’s ridiculously over the top. Another person may look at that and realize some of the preparation and work that it took to get there and think that it’s well deserved. It is a matter of perspective.
An adult may look at the path of a young person who spends a summer or two working at camp and think, “They certainly could have been doing more with their time and making more money instead of just having fun and playing games at camp.” However, from our perspective, it looks very different.
We have the unique opportunity to see young people come here, some of whom go through our Student Ministry Team training. We see them return a year later with a passion to serve on summer staff. The jobs are tedious, the hours are long and the pace is crazy, but they join arms with their fellow camp workers and get it done. They are learning to work as a team and realizing what it means to be depended upon. They find themselves mentoring others, showing campers the love of Christ, and having the unique opportunity to see life-changing transitions take place. Some of our veteran camp counselors leave here having introduced dozens of kids to Christ. They would be hard pressed to find another place to spend their time where they would have a similar eternal impact.
Is working at camp for everyone? Of course not. We see situations that don’t pan out well on a fairly regular basis. We have those who pass through here for a short time and soon know that the pace and responsibility of working with campers is not for them. However, we see even those situations as valuable learning experiences. Whether a young person walks away from camp enthused about camp ministry or relieved that it’s in their rear-view mirror, it’s our desire that they learn something about themselves and about what’s truly important in life.
